Within We don’t need the State to Promote Diversity, Canadian Citizens, both young and old, are photographed representing ideas of Canadian identities and representations of their ethnic backgrounds. My work grows out of a critique of MP Jason Kenny’s recent quest to “tighten the definition of what it means to be Canadian.” In order to illustrate this I am using a diptych format showing: 1) photographed participant as a Canadian Persona, 2) participant as their Ethnic Persona. The subject’s portraits display their choice in representing their ethnic background and a Canadian persona that they or any Canadian citizen might relate to. Only a partial selection of the complete series, I have attempted to include works indicating the breadth of my collaborator’s backgrounds. The project celebrates our multicultural society, which encourages its citizens to embrace both their Canadian and ethnic cultures, regardless of the pressures some sectors of society place on us to conform.
