In contemporary culture traditional art media such as drawing and painting have become secondary to technological achievements. Photography, film, and new media have replaced art forms that once brought the artist into a close relationship with their subject. Beyond the Closet is an animated documentary exploring issues of queer identity and acceptability through a series of short vignettes. All vignettes were created to explore the character behind the words and their experiences of coming out. Some are humorous while others convey an emotional roller coaster that gay and lesbian individuals face. The film resists traditional documentary narratives by exploring stories through a series of vignettes, each animated in a unique style. Whether that be 2 dimensional paper dolls in a 3 dimensional space, or clay figures animated to reflect the personality and stories of each character, each story is treated with a sense of playfulness, and sometimes humour, that sheds a new light on stories that have previously been conveyed as a source of trauma and sadness. The new animated documentary provides a platform with which these stories can be visually represented while remaining true to the truth behind documenting personal narratives.

Christine Engel is a Toronto-based visual artist. She completed a double Bachelor's degree at the University of Saskatchewan in Fine Arts and Art History, and is currently completing a Master's degree at Ryerson University in Documentary Media. She works primarily in charcoal and acrylic paint, but is constantly experimenting with new media and styles of expression. Her latest project is a series of abstract portraits in which the inspiration for the work is the influence of musical preferences by which the subjects define themselves. Christine's interest in documentary film is in early veritÈ and contemporary practices of redefining the documentary itself.
