dō is a documentary-based installation that explores the historic causes and conditions that have lead up to personal experiences of martial arts training and practice. Using a calligraphy metaphor, the work investigates the mutually causal relationships between students and instructors of martial arts.

The nature of experience-based learning is explored in a temporal, causal and interactive installation that positions the viewer as co-author of the documentary narrative. For viewers, the installation provides a discourse to the nature of experience-based learning and aligns open system theory with martial arts culture, Zen, contemporary history, and personal anecdotes. The work includes a number of stories and interviews from some of Canada’s most respected martial arts instructors. A mixture of fable, fact, humour, regret, and hope guide the viewer through a non-linear narrative based on the artist’s personal experiences.
