What? Feminists creating porn? That’s what the Canadian Border Security guard asked me when I came back into the country from an inspiring shoot in San Francisco and LA with legendary feminist porn performers and directors.

As a self-described feminist, I’m interested in how other women create their own meanings of feminism whether that is through art, politics, or education. These female pornographers influence art, politics and sexual education all by picking up a camera and making the type of porn they want to see. In other words, “Sistas are doing it for themselves!”

Not only are these women actively changing the method of production and business of pornography, but they are also influencing the film form by utilizing the female gaze. Most often they approach pornography, as fantasy, but also as documentary – they are documenting real experiences, real sex and real orgasms. Needless to say, many of the films are also highly educational.

I find these women to be sex-rock revolutionaries and I hope that this film highlights how this particular genre of pornography is different from the mainstream and why it’s a legitimate and empowering form of cinema.

Since graduating from Ryerson’s Radio and Television Arts program in 2001, Joanne Loton has been working steadily in the Canadian television industry as researcher, associate producer, and writer/director for factual entertainment, docu-drama and full- length documentary productions airing on National Geographic International, Discovery Channel Canada, A&E (US), History Channel, BBC4, and HBO.

Interested in sub-cultures that arise out of blue-collar factory towns and exploring the ways that women defy stereotypes, Joanne is currently developing a documentary about an all female punk rock band from Hamilton who are juggling their rock star ambitions with motherhood. She recently co-produced I ME WED, an interactive new media installation that debuted at Nuit Blanche 2008, which encouraged women to get married to themselves in an affirmation of self-love. Her feature documentary film Women Will Come: Feminists Redefining Pornography will be presented at the NFB as part of the MFA Doc/Now Festival in June 2009.
