The Valley of Dry Bones is an observational short-form documentary film that follows the lives of two women, Edna Barnett and Virginia Davis, as they struggle to rebuild a once-vibrant evangelical inner-city church that is now the last stitch of fabric holding together the economically ravaged community of East 93rd Street in Cleveland, Ohio. As a Cleveland-native, I was instantly drawn to this story because it is a smaller story that reflects on a larger issue facing much of my home and America. The church is at the center of a vast matrix—within it is the community that has been decimated by crime and a recent surge in foreclosures, the declining church membership, and the two stubbornly optimistic women who have been left with the task of rebuilding the aging structure. Through Edna and Virginia the viewer will see how a church is more than just building for worship – the church is an agent for community fellowship.
